The potential of raw materiality
Matla Office with its dual facade, tranquil Southern approach - and glazed Northern-facade
overlooking Lynnwood Road creates an enhanced feeling of place on this well-known
intersection. The building’s bulk and materiality speak of passive sustainability with deep facades, formal maturity and a playful review of standard building elements. The new Matla home is honest, resilient and functional from semi-basement up to spacious roof garden.
The northern and the southern facades of this project are designed to reflect the location of the project where it joins an older suburban context on the South with an emerging commercial space on the North. As the first of several proposed commercial projects being developed along this main arterial road linking the highway to the central business and retail centre of Menlyn in Pretoria, it sets a new aesthetic for smaller office projects. The deliberate celebration of different materials in the facades, the balustrades and detailing provides a distinctive tonality that fits the brand personality of the building occupant, Matla Quantity Surveyors. Grounded, open and authentic.
The interior of the building continues the celebration of authentic materials with the use of raw brickwork, screed, off-shutter soffits and exposed services. The rhythm and pattern created by the predominant balustrades on the North facade are echoed with slatted timber finishes whilst the use of black brick echoes the facades of the Southern facade.
