Smart inside and out.
Aimed at increasing tertiary educational opportunities within the city of Tshwane, the Menlyn Learning Hub breaks the mould of traditional institutional architecture and design.
Developed on an old sports ground, formally an illegal dumping ground, the site sits between the human-made suburban fabric and a natural river system. The new development reconnects these divided areas through a unifying architectural language.
This results in a vibrant, flexible and inviting campus that integrates the existing green spaces and concrete surroundings to create an immersive learning environment.
The site’s gentle sloping contours and creek influenced and informed the design of the campus and the building.
Created with durable, long lasting materials, the contemporary five-story educational facility includes administration blocks, a canteen area, a central external piazza seating area, lecture rooms and a library. It is a modern, dynamic design that raises the bar, creating a place and space suited to the lifestyle of students and educational staff. The campus grounds consist of a series of terraced landscapes, embracing public activity, engagement and interaction from the entrance of the campus through the courtyard to the contemplative walkways along the riverbanks below. A staircase divides the classroom wings and acts as a portal between social and study spaces. .
